I keep telling myself that crazy isn’t all bad.
When I’m crying while making Macaroni and Cheese for Thanksgiving Dinner, I think. . . .. .I’m not that abnormal.
Not that, weird.
And even if I am. . . . .I’m thinking that’s what makes me interesting.
I cry for no reason.
I yell at the drop of a hat.
Then, while wiping the snot from my face, I kiss the people I just yelled at.
Instability.
It’s really rather sexy.
David O. Russel brings this exact sensibility to light in his new movie Silver Linings Playbook. It’s a sharp comedy that also turns out to be a surprisingly sweet romance. The jokes are hilarious, and the performances of Bradley Cooper (Pat Solitano) and Jennifer Lawrence (Tiffany) are spot on crazy, yet nut-job lovable.
When we meet Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper) we learn that he was sentenced to eight months of mental hospitalization after he walked in on his wife Nikki (Brea Bee) having sex with another man. He was sentenced to a hospital stay because he beat the man half to death.
Despite his ex-wife’s indiscretions and his lengthy hospital stay, once released Pat still labors under the delusion that he will get Nikki back. Soon he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) who is a whole ‘nother’ ball of crazy because she is currently trying to cope with her husbands death by sleeping with a plethora of local men to mend her broken heart.
She’s not a ho.
It just sounds like it.
The two become unlikely friends while forming a pact to help each other out. Pat wants to get back with Nikki through Tiffany, and Tiffany wants a partner for a couples dance contest.
This movie is definitely a study in the silly, soul-bearing, pain, and suffering that comes from being in a world where you just want be real, without completely being sane.
The entire cast is completely solid.
And totally crazy as well.
Chris Tucker ( Pat’s friend Danny) is a crazy friend from the hospital.
Robert DeNiro (Pat’s Dad) is the crazy father with compulsive tendencies and a bad gambling habit.
Jackie Weaver (Pat’s Mom) is the mildly crazy and hilarious sweet mom who is forced to accept her troubled family.
Silver Linings Playbook is a lovely story. Original and entertaining.
You’ll leave the theater happier than when you got there.
I might even venture to say it’s the best movie I’ve seen this year.
Except that I just saw Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part II.
4 times in 4 days.
Which I think just added another notch to my crazy.
