I feel a little bad.
Monday was the start of the school year, and it’s the first time in 14 years that I’ve been by myself for the period of time between 8am and 3pm.
The older girls hit the pavement without even looking back.
But, Phoebe was a little ‘throw-up lodged in her throat” at the thought of starting kinder.
She cried. Not the ugly snot on your shirt crying, but still it was crying all the same.
I snuck out of her classroom just as her eyes filled with tears and she slowly whispered, “Mommy, don’t leave me.”
But I did leave her.
And everyone since has been calling to see if I’m okay.
Nobody is calling to see if Phoebe is okay. They already know. If she’s not. She will be.
But me.
That’s who everyone is really worried about.
Was I sad?
For a second, when tears came fell Phoebe’s eyes.
Did I cry?
NOT FOR ONE MILLISECOND.
Not because I don’t love her, or miss her.
I didn’t cry because, its been 14 years since I’ve had peace and quiet and I think I’m due .

I have a list of projects. . . .89 projects deep of things that I’ve been wanting to make and create and build.
And that’s just the stuff I thought to write down.
This is one of my first projects. . . .
I first spied the Pottery Barn Version in a magazine a few years ago. $399.
It was never going to happen for me if I didn’t figure out a way to make it myself.
I’m thinking of making another. With more opaque paint, possibly a whitewash, with slimmer shims.
Suddenly, it’s like I’m a pearl. . .
and the world is my oyster.
Pottery Barn Knock Off – Painted Pieced Artwork
What I used:
Art Canvas
Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
Acrylic Paint
Scrap Wood (enough to act as a frame for your canvas)
Wood Stain
What I did:
1. I Found an old ugly canvas at the thrift store for $3. You can find all sorts of canvas for inexpensive prices new at hobby stores.
2. I arranged my wood shims onto the canvas and hot glued them down.
3. Next, I painted it with acrylic paints.
For a more whitewash look. . .add water to your paint. . .this will allow you to see the grain. Let it dry 12 -24 hours.
5. Next, I grabbed some scrap wood in the garage to build a frame around the wood shim artwork.
I cut the wood to size (I built the frame so that there would be an inch of wall space showing being the artwork and the frame.)
Stained it. Let it dry. The I used brackets to screw it together.
6. And then I hung it. Or he hung it. Same thing.
